Advanced Chess
The advanced class will start with a quick review of the rules and quickly transition to calculation skills by examining checkmate patterns. Other tactical motifs will be explained and demonstrated where students will be able to reproduce them in their own games (double attacks, pins, skewers, x-ray attack, destroying the guard, decoy …excreta).

Like the beginner class, strategy will be broken down into phases. In addition, strategy will be explained through the classical style (the 16 advantages developed by first world champion Wilhelm Steinitz).

A little time will be spent on openings and defenses so as to give students a good start at the beginning of a game.

As above, historical battles and how those ideas correspond to chess strategy and tactics will be mixed in.

Students will benefit by:
  • Improving mental visualization skills
  • Problem solving with logic
  • Improving confidence and a belief in one’s abilities
  • Practicing using a positive attitude
  • A better understanding of the human civilization timeline (History)

Enrollment is limited to current Punahou students.

Beginning Chess
The basics will be covered in the first few weeks: how to move the pieces, rules of play and how to win or draw, how to record a game, and proper etiquette. In comparison to the advanced class, this class will go at a more relaxed pace.

Strategy will be broken down into simple goals for each phase of the game: opening, middle-game, endgame and transitions.

Various tactical methods will be taught that will allow students to see many moves ahead.

Mixed in will be historical battles and how those ideas correspond to chess strategy and tactics.

Students will benefit by:
  • Improving mental visualization skills
  • Problem solving with logic
  • Improving confidence and a belief in one’s abilities
  • Practicing using a positive attitude
  • A better understanding of the human civilization timeline (History)

Dance
As the Dance School shifts to distance learning for Summer 2020, we strive to continue our students’ training and provide them with a sense of well-being, collaboration and growth even while apart. Please note that the former schedule has been revised significantly to accommodate remote teaching.

To participate in our livestream classes, you will need:
  • Device to stream classes, with video camera and screen (i.e. iPhone, iPad, laptop)
  • WiFi connectivity: We don’t have control over internet connection on the student’s end.
  • Zoom: You will need to sign up for a free account. We are using secured sessions and have a security monitor for each class. You can stream from your browser or the app.
  • Floor space: A cleared space that is wide enough to do floor stretches, some lateral movement, and minimal jumping. Tap students may want a piece of chipboard or plywood laid over a non-slip surface to protect floors.
  • Barre: Ballet students need something to use as a barre, positioned just below shoulder height – a countertop or sturdy chair can work.

Dance Attire and Shoes: Dancers should wear hair tied back away from the face (preferably in a bun for ballet) and wear appropriate attire for their dance form. Shoes depend on your floor surface – note that carpet can ruin ballet slippers, and socks can be slippery on hard surfaces.

Grades 1 – 8 Online Enrichment Program
The Summer Online Enrichment Program aims to reach as many students as possible within the broad range of needs represented in our community. While recognizing the value of connections with classmates, learning, and community, the course will include the daily reinforcement of skills in three strands, Math, Literacy/Language Arts, and STEAM.

Literacy/Language Arts Strand

Grades 1-5: The curriculum of the daily Literacy/Language Arts strand will be aligned with the approach in the Junior School at Punahou utilizing techniques from the Teachers College Reading and Writing project from Columbia University. As reading and writing are complementary skills, their instruction will be integrated.

Grades 6-8: Strengthening reading, writing, listening and speaking skills is at the heart of this strand, laying the foundation for students’ experience in middle school and beyond. Using a variety of materials and mixture of assignments, students will deepen their understanding of the depth and complexity of the English language.

Math Strand

Grades 1-5: Starting with a playful and inquisitive approach through Investigations 3 in the younger grades to mastering the building blocks of arithmetic through enVision Math, this strand is also aligned with the curriculum of the Junior School to prepare students for the more abstract and algebraic thinking found in middle school.

Grades 6-8: This strand is designed to develop students who possess mathematical habits of mind, which will allow them to approach authentic problems by thinking, asking questions, and reasoning. The curriculum of the course is founded on the same practices and principles of the middle school mathematics curriculum at Punahou School.

STEAM Strand

Grades 1-8: Students will explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Movement) concepts through projects and challenges using materials found at home. They may find themselves coding with Scratch, engineering a sound amplifier for Horton, creating their own musical instrument, or solving a real-world problem in this strand that will challenge students to design, experiment, iterate, and fail forward.

During scheduled synchronous class times, students will experience:
  • Daily check-ins with a homeroom teacher
  • Live instruction in math, literacy, and STEAM
  • Independent work time with teacher support present
  • Group activities and sharing

Independently students may:
  • Complete tasks or assignments provided during synchronous instruction
  • Continue to explore and research a concept or topic presented
  • Design, create and iterate
For planning purposes, please see the sample schedule below.  Particularly for our youngest learners, parents or other adults should assist by:
  • Creating a safe and distraction free learning environment
  • Providing support in remaining on task and task completion

Enrollment is limited to current Punahou students.

Group Piano Classes
Group Piano is a comprehensive course of piano study that builds a solid foundation for music learning through active group participation. In small groups of 3 – 6 students, children develop proper piano technique; learn note reading and the fundamentals of music. Children also learn to respond to music through listening and movement activities. It takes an average of three school years to complete the course.

During the summer, all classes meet twice a week.  Distance Learning Group Piano Classes will include synchronous online instruction and/or asynchronous instruction.

No new students will be accepted this summer for the Group Piano Program.

Please review program information, an introductory video and FAQs at http://www.punahou.edu/grouppiano

Virtual Reality Internship: Create Immersive Simulations
The winds howl, the house trembles, then rips apart. You are in the middle of a virtual reality simulation, experiencing firsthand what it feels like to be in a Category 5 hurricane.

The young student puts on the goggles and assumes the controls on the stunt plane. Barrel roll! Loop-the-loop! Power dive! She is one of 18,000 students across Hawaii who each year can learn about the principles of flight in virtual reality because of your creative efforts to help build this flight simulator.

These are some of the simulations we are building, and we invite you to join us on the cutting edge. Come learn how to create the art, sound, code, story, and interactions that enable people to immerse into situations too dangerous, inaccessible or otherwise impossible to experience firsthand.

This is a new type of summer school course: a summer internship where you work closely with a real startup on the cutting edge.

Learn professional skills, work on real projects, gain industry insight, innovate with new technologies.
  • Creating virtual interactable worlds in Unity game design platform
  • 3D modeling and animation
  • Project and resource management
  • Establishing and meeting production requirements
  • Introductions to C# coding language
Office hours: Students from either section can drop in to receive additional support or simply hang out.

Enrollment will be limited to current Punahou students. All registrants will be placed in a wait pool, and preference will be given to those previously enrolled in the on-campus versions of the course. A lottery will be conducted to fill all vacant spaces. Confirmation of enrollment will be communicated before May 21.
